Case Study: A Practice Monitoring Efficacy of a New Advanced Clinical Practitioner

Denise Smith,
Practice Manager
Merepark Medical Centre

What was our problem?

We offer an open surgery every morning which is exceptionally busy. GPs were feeling overworked and that they did not have enough time to spend with more complex patients.

A brand new role for the practice

We decided to employ an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, this was a brand new role to the practice. We wanted to free up GP time to spend with more complex cases. I used Apex to monitor the efficacy of this role. I decided to measure reattendance, to check that patients seeing the ANP did not return to see a GP.

Using data to monitor services over the next 5 years

We were delighted to find that 100% of patients who attend an ANP appointment did not reattend with a GP. This gives us the reassurance we need to now employ a second ANP. In fact, the partners now want to use Apex to monitor all services to inform workforce plans.

To find this data, navigate to Productivity & QI > Reattendance. Scroll down to the Top 100 table and click on a patients Apex number. Click on the Appointment Trend tab to view appointment count broken down by workforce.
