Case Study: A City Centre Enhanced Access Service Understanding and Validating Usage

What was our problem?

We offer both extended hours across GP services and also through locality hubs. Patients can book either GP, Clinical Pharmacist or Nurse appointments. Bookings can be made via NHS 111, online services, emergency departments and out of hours. We needed to understand how patients booked into these services and which areas they were travelling from.  

Dashboard overview

We used a dashboard in APEX to show us where patients travelled from, and how they booked into the service. The data showed clear variation in usage across our different hub locations. Additionally we were able to see the time of day when bookings took place, enabling us to match capacity with demand. 

Benefits to Primary Care

We now use this information to inform decisions on extended hours services. Commissioners use APEX data to consider staff ratios at hubs, locations of hubs, access pathways for patients, appropriate skill mix, appointment allocation and appointment utilisation.
